OPEN OCEAN 650 SAILING CATAMARAN BY DU TOIT YACHT DESIGN

The Open Ocean 650 is an impressive fast-cruising sailing catamaran, designed by Du Toit Yacht Design and built by Two Oceans Marine, both of Cape Town. 

She was built in epoxy E-Glass composites to a high standard for an owner who is an avid sport fisherman and who required a comfortable, fast-cruising catamaran to enjoy sport fishing and diving trips in comfort with family and friends. Pelican, as she is named, has a large sail plan and powerful motors which provide the performance required to arrive at destinations in short time.

At the back of the aft deck, the Open Ocean 650 boats a semi-rigid inflatable, powered by twin 70hp motors that is herself rigged for light tackle game fishing and exploratory expeditions or fetching guests to bring them to the boat.

In general, this elegant and impressive craft is a villa on the water - The aft cockpit is massive and an ideal floating outdoor living area, with plenty of comfortable seating and a table for twelve guests to enjoy al fresco living under cover and out of the sun. There is also a “toy locker” where all the “toys” in the form of fishing and diving equipment are kept, conveniently located for easy access and use.

The fly bridge is the nerve centre of the boat, and linked to the interior navigation station, has all the controls for every aspect of running the boat – from the electric winches for all the sails, to the Furono NavNet and engine controls. It also has ample comfortable seating, and is in effect a second aft cockpit, perfect for chilling out or joining the helmsman for cocktails or socialising with an impressive view.

The interior design was done by Nika Design Studio, and is comfortable and stylish, tailored for easy living by keeping spaces open and free flowing. The interior saloon area is spacious and has every home comfort one could wish for and almost panoramic 360 degree views. Pelican is indeed a luxurious home away from home, with “bedrooms and bathrooms” rather than “cabins and heads” that one would expect to find on a boat – all the cabins have beautifully appointed en-suite bathrooms, palatial double beds and air conditioning. Pelican indeed provides comfortable accommodation for family and friends as well as accommodation for two permanent crew.

The sailing and motoring performance of the Open Ocean 650 catamaran are impressive – the twin 165hp Yamnar diesel motors are used both for long-distance motoring as well as for adding to the forward momentum of Pelican while she is sailing. She has been expertly designed to travel at nine knots under motor with only one motor operating at 2700 rpm, providing for maximum fuel efficiency. She can carry 1500 litres of fuel.

It is clear that designer Anton du Toit and builder Mark Delany of Two Oceans Marine have done an exemplary job of fulfilling the owner’s brief for on on-the-water villa that could be visited at any time in any exotic location of their choice across the globe – a yacht that could perform beautifully, either harnessing the wind or under motor, while not sacrificing comfort, practicality or safety. This vision has certainly been turned into an elegant and beautiful reality in Pelican.

DU TOIT YACHT DESIGN EXCITING NEW 75 FT EXPEDITION CATAMARAN IS LAUNCHED

The Open Ocean 750 Expedition Yacht is an impressive 75 foot catamaran, custom designed by Du Toit Yacht Design. Designing this impressive expedition catamaran was a project that took 30 months and involved 1750 hours of design work, with three designers involved at various stages in drawing up the interiors, lines,structure and various mechanical details. 

Du Toit Yacht Design has launched the exciting 75 foot expedition catamaran, the Open Ocean 750 Luxury Expedition Yacht, built by Two Oceans Marine in Cape Town, South Africa. Aptly named Quo Vadis the Open Ocean 750 Expedition Yacht is an impressive 75 foot catamaran, powered by two Cummins 228 kW/305 HP motors. It was custom designed by Du Toit Yacht Design for a seasoned game fisherman, and is stylish and luxurious as well as comfortable and functional. The Open Ocean 750 is essentially the big sister of the successful Open Ocean 630, also designed by Du Toit Yacht Design and built by Two Oceans Marine and launched last year. Designing this impressive expedition catamaran was a project that took 30 months and involved 1750 hours of design work, with three designers involved at various stages in drawing up the interiors, lines, structure and various mechanical details. 

Although the 750 Expedition Yacht is not designed to sail, but rather to motor for long distances, it has the same elegant lines and styling as the Open Ocean 630. Quo Vadis is the mother ship for Two Oceans 48 Sport Fisher Game Fishing Boat, and with her powerful engines and large fuel capacity, she is capable of towing this craft on lengthy game fishing expeditions, and has been robustly designed and built for transatlantic voyages. Accommodation is luxurious by expedition yacht standards, and at the same time comfortable and highly practical. The catamaran has ample accommodation and sleeps up to eight guests in four double cabins. Each cabin has its own spacious en-suite bathroom, with a heads and a shower. In addition, there are two crew cabins, accommodating three crew. Every little detail in Quo Vadis’ design has been carefully thought out and planned, and she has everything a group of game fisherman would require for game fishing expedition – from bait boxes and numerous fridges and storage lockers, to a state-of-the-art sound system and navigation station, to washing machines, wet lockers and air conditioning. 

She boasts two spacious aft cockpits – one upper and one lower – both protected from the sun and the elements. The lower aft cockpit is fitted out with an outdoor galley so that guests can enjoy watching their meals and possibly their catch being prepared over a few drinks in the good weather of the Mozambican waters, which will be Quo Vadis’primary base. The main saloon is spacious, and the galley is part of this area, rather than being hidden below as one finds in many charter boats. This impressive catamaran certainly has a more relaxed atmosphere, and is one where one would often expect the guests to enjoy preparing their own food or partaking in its preparation, while enjoying a cold beverage after a day of fishing. The interior of the boat is beautifully finished with wooden laminate flooring, and plenty of stylishly finished cupboard space. Above deck, the seemingly endless decks are beautifully finished in teak, and around every turn on the beautifully laid out exterior, is another toy – two canoes and a small RIB on the foredeck, and a large davit which holds a large RIB on the aft deck, providing some privacy to the occupants of the aft cockpits when Quo Vadis is moored stern to. The Open Ocean 750 Luxury Expedition Yacht is certainly the perfect yacht for a game fishing expedition in comfort and style. Certainly, one could not ask for more perfect accommodation or transport for a serious but luxurious fishing trip away with the boys.
